You are Sonic the Hedgehog, you have been fighting crime for an unmeasurable amount of time, and you are respected by the world as a hero. For some unknown reason, the military has just kidnapped you. You manage to escape from their jet into a bustling metropolis, and find tons of military bots waiting for you there. You then are forced to fight through the military to escape the city. You are Dr. Eggman, you have been coming up with evil plans for your whole life, but every time you have been thwarted by Sonic. You have just found evidence that shows that your grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, created the ultimate lifeform before he died, but before it could do anything it was captured by the military and hid away in a remote base. You plan to make an assault on the base and awaken the lifeform to aid you in your quest to stop Sonic.
This is the setting for the first level of the game in hero and dark mode. As you can see, the two stories are parallel. The ultimate lifeform is a hedgehog who looks like Sonic (sort of...) going around causing mayhem. The military is most probably color blind because Shadow, the ultimate lifeform, is black. As Sonic, you have to clear your name and find out who Shadow is working for, and as Robotnik, you have to stop Sonic and take over the world.
Along the way, you will have to play as Tails, Robotnik, Knuckles, and Rouge too. Tails and Robotnik run around in a huge machines which blast things (which sort of defeats the purpose of Tails), and as Knuckles and Rouge you have to find hidden shards of the master emerald, which is probably the coolest mode of them all. Of course, you play as Sonic and Shadow on some levels, too. These levels are very fast-paced and action-oriented.
Every level has five objectives to it. The first is to just beat the level, the second is to collect 100 rings in that level, the third is to find the lost Chao hidden somewhere in the level, the fourth is to beat the level within a certain time limit, and the fifth is to beat a harder version of the level. You only need to complete the first objective to advance to the next level, but every objective you complete earns you an emblem. If you collect all of the emblems, a secret level will open. Also, you get a rank for every objective you complete. It can be an A, B, C, D, or E. If you manage to get all A's for all the objectives, for all the levels, for one character, you earn one whole emblem!! Obviously, these six emblems are the hardest to acquire.
In every level, there are three blue Chao boxes. The first contains a key, the second a bunch of animals, and the third holds a special animal. The key allows you to go to Chao World at the end of the level. The first time you arrive in Chao world, you will find two doors. One goes to the Chao Garden, and the other will take you to the Chao Kindergarten. In the Chao Garden you will find two Chao eggs waiting to be hatched. You can raise, teach, and even race your Chao.
Chao are probably the swiftiest part of Sonic Adventure 2. In order to raise them you must give them animals and Chaos drives. Animals can be found wandering around the levels, or in Chao boxes. Chaos drives can be obtained by destroying military robots. Different colors improve different abilities of the Chao. Eventually, after you give them enough animals and chaos drives, they will evolve into a new form. When your Chao evolves, you earn the Dark Garden or the Light Garden, depending on whether you raised your Chao with Hero characters or dark characters.
Once your Chao gets good enough you can enter him in races against other Chao. You can earn a huge amount of different races if you beat the beginner ones. You can earn prizes from a lot of the races, such as a watering can, a shovel, and even some emblems! Another spiffy feature of the Chao is the fact that you can put them in your VMU and play Chao Adventure 2! In CA2 you basically wait for your Chao to say or do something, then act accordingly. The best part about it is that you can earn seeds to plant in your Chao Garden.
Overall, Sonic Adventure 2 is a pretty good game. Chao shoot the game's replay value into the sky, but the multiplayer, to say the least, is un-mondo. Another cool feature of the game is the fact that if you collect all the emblems in the game, you unlock a 3-D version of Green Hill Zone! I haven't done it myself yet, but I'm getting there. One last thing to mention is the music, which, for the most part, is pretty swift.

I never had the pleasure of playing Sonic Adventure (the
original) for more than a few minutes, so I did not know what
to expect on this one. Slade Monotoli said it was good for
Dreamcast, but I had no idea. I had been playing Sonic since
I was five, so I gave this game a chance.........and was rewarded.
The fact that you can play two different sides of a battle
and then unite against a common enemy was a good plot I thought.
The gameplay is enjoyable, and it is appropriate for all ages.
Replay value was there also.
