Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour
As expansion packs go, this is one of the better ones I have played in a while. C&C: Generals was a good game, but it was missing things here and there. Zero our fixed most all of those issues. Here is a quote from the EA Games C&C: Generals website.

Next-Generation Armies for the Next Generation of War
Unload on your enemies with an all-new, hi-tech arsenal featuring 30 new units and 20 new upgrades from the Chinese ECM Tank to the United States Spectre Gunship.

The Ultimate Challenge
Enlist in the all-new Generals Challenge mode where you match your strategies-and your next-generation arsenal-against 9 enemy AI Generals with unique personalities, tactics, and taunts.

New Missions, Tomorrow’s Headlines
15 new missions rattle veteran Generals as they set out to destroy the U.S. fleet in the Mediterranean, root out a splinter cell in Cairo and send in special operatives to capture weapons of mass destruction.

Combat the Elements
All new weather effects further immerse you in a more realistic combat environment.

Take the Battle Online
Prepare for multiplayer mayhem with 25 new multiplayer maps! ”

As you can see, they went all out. With the new generals, it adds so much to the game-play with their special abilities, general promotions, units, and taunt lines, it adds a whole new personal aspect to the game. There are 3 generals of each faction. USA gets Malcolm “Ace” Granger, the Air Force specialist; “Pinpoint” Townes, the laser weapons expert; and Alexis Alexander, the super-weapons specialist. Global Liberation Army gets Dr. Thrax, the self-explanatory toxin general; Prince Kassad, master of camoflage; and Rodall “Demo” Juhziz, master of explosives. Finally, China gets Ta Hun Kwai, tank extrodanaire; Tsing Shi Tao, commander of nuclear supremacy; and “Anvil” Shin Fai, who has awesome infantry units.

I have been playing the new Generals Challenge Mode which is explained in the EA excerpt above, and I am liking it a lot. I am General Townes, and I am against te 6th general now. They start with prefabricated bases, and hold the whole map, and you have to fend off their attacks while building your own strike force. It adds a lot of strategy and fun to the game. Also, the new multiplayer maps are a plus, expanding the fun of trying new terrain.

The addition of all of the units helps a lot. Before the game was sort of monotonous, with not too many units for U.S, only one base defense per team, all of that has changed with new structures (U.S.A. Firebase, Chinese Internet Center, Etc.), units (like the Microwave Tank, Battle Bus, Etc) and general promotions (Carpet bombers, GLA Surprise Attacks, Etc.) and upgrades (Stealth Fighter Bunker Busters, Chinese Isotope Stability, Etc). This just makes the game more well rounded, interesting, and replayable.

The last thing I will mention is the campaigns because I have not done too much with them yet. The missions are much like the original C&C: Generals ones, but with support from the U.S. Navy now with its battle cruisers, aircraft carriers, and destroyers, and other new features involving new units to make the game more fun. The sound in this game incorporates most of the old C&C: Generals music, but with a few additions. The graphics remain very realistic, with the flames from a particle cannon lingering on the fields, to the nuclear radiation creeping across a base, to the pieces of ground flying in the air from a bunker buster bomb. The replay value is very high, this game is one of the ones that takes a very long time to get old, unlike some games I have played.

I enjoyed this game a whole lot. Overall, they did a sweet job of improving C&C: Generals, and if you own it, I HIGHLY recommend getting this expansion pack.

I have always been a fan of the Command and Conquer series. In fact, it was a mixture of Red Alert and also Starcraft that brought me into PC gaming in the first place. I really enjoyed Generals, even though it was definately lacking in some points, but Zero Hour really let me down.

This really shouldn't be referred to as an expansion. It is more like an update. It is a patch that fixes the holes that were in Generals. It adds some cool units and buildings, a new single player campaign, but not much else. Basically, if you put the original and the expansion together, they finally make a whole game. So I really can't rate the expansion high when all it does is fix the original rather than go further and make Generals into an outstanding game.

The single player campaign isn't really worth much attention. It is over before you know it. It is just TOO short. I can beat it as all three sides easily in less than half a day, and that's only if I'm not hurrying. Really, it's pathetic.

So, if you just want some cool unit and building additions that you can use to expand your online gaming go ahead and buy this game. If you were looking for more, than I guess you will just have to wait.
