At E3 we discovered that the much-loved Advance Wars series
is being transformed into a GameCube game from the Game Boy
Advance. That is not the only major change for the series
though. Advance Wars: Under Fire will be a real time, 3-D,
quick response combat game whereas the Game Boy version was
turn based, taking place from a birds eye view at whatever
pace you chose. In the way that Command and Conquer Renegade
took the Command and Conquer series to the soldiers
view from the overlord perspective, Advance Wars: Under Fire
aims to do the same thing. You can only command a few soldiers
at a time, but the rest of
your soldiers will defend areas where they are deployed and
respond to attacks until you lead them into battle. You can
also possessunits
and fight from their perspective, and once they perish you
move on to another.
Like
Advance Wars games of the past, players need to learn what
units are effective against other types, and which will get
slaughtered. For instance, a Bomber will get wasted by a long-range
Missile unit. There are some new Commanding Officers along
with some new units combined with the classic Advance Wars
units. The game looks to be extremely action-packed, and it
should be quite interesting to see how this change in perspective
and gameplay will change the series that so many people already
enjoyed. Unfortunately, it is not scheduled to launch until
2011 as of now.
