It's no secret that Japan is crazy. Truly, every single citizen of the island is stark-raving mad. I also hear they make games or something over there. It's nothing unusual for these two aspects of Japan to unite in one fantastic[ally disturbing] experience. Now, I know what you're all thinking: "Well, I certainly get my fill of virtual cooking and virtual dating and virtual washing clothes from Japanese games, but when can I destroy evil by growing four feet and busting out mad riffs on a giant guitar?" Well, your time has come. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Gitaroo Man.
The first thing you'll think when you turn on the game is "Wow. And I thought we had potent drugs in America." As you play, however, the game proves to be a truly unique and enjoyable experience.
Graphics: 8/10 The graphics aren’t a whole lot to look at, but they serve their purpose; they're colorful, weird, and manga-esque, although they don't use anything too complex.
Gameplay: 9/10 Simple and fun, you basically move the analog stick and press the buttons to match the orange noodles on the screen and play the guitar sounds. It doesn’t shoot too high, but it does what it does well.
Sound: 10/10 This is where the game shines; ten levels of music spanning from J-Pop to reggae to drum’n bass to industrial Spanish guitar (trust me, it works). The music is what makes the game, and it’s all good.
Lasting Appeal: 8/10 There's only ten levels, but they're hella fun to replay. You can also unlock a master mode (which is damn near impossible to pass the second level on). There's also a multiplayer mode which is good for a few kicks (though nothing to keep you occupied for over an hour or so at a time.)
Overall: 8.5/10 Truly, a simple, fun, addicting, innovative game. If you happen to come across it at a store (it should be under $30 or so) I highly recommend you pick it up.
